Englewood Hospital Receives Leapfrog 'A' Hospital Safety Grade for Fall '24

Hospital Has Achieved Top Safety Grade for 23 Rating Periods

November 15, 2024 - Englewood Hospital has been awarded an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for fall 2024, marking the 23rd time the hospital has earned this top safety rating. The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog dedicated to advancing quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system, established the grading system in 2012, and Englewood Hospital has consistently achieved a top rating since then.

One of only four hospitals in New Jersey to receive 11 consecutive ‘A’ ratings since 2019, Englewood Hospital’s consistent high marks underscore its ongoing commitment to patient safety.

“We are proud to receive an ‘A’ rating from The Leapfrog Group,” says Kathleen Kaminsky, MS, RN, NE-BC, senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Englewood Hospital. “Patient safety is a top priority at Englewood Hospital—and achieving an A grade, again this rating period, means our entire team has maintained laser focus on each patient’s safety. Thank you to everyone at Englewood Hospital, whose commitment to the safety of our patients is reflected in this top safety grade.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is widely regarded as the nation’s gold standard for patient safety, providing letter grades for nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country. This rating period, Englewood Hospital joins only 31 hospitals in New Jersey awarded an ‘A’ grade.

Tina Bloemer, MSN, RN, CPHQ, CPHRM, FASHRM, vice president for quality at Englewood Health, adds “We are tenacious in our drive to always provide the highest quality, safe care for our patients. Receiving this ‘A’ grade for the eleventh consecutive time is an important achievement accomplished by our entire team. Only a handful of hospitals in New Jersey achieve the highest standards of patient safety year after year and, at Englewood Hospital, we are proud to provide this nationally recognized level of care for our communities.”

The Leapfrog Safety Grade is determined through a rigorous evaluation of national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, and additional data sources. These measures create a composite score that reflects a hospital’s ability to protect patients from preventable harm and medical errors.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Englewood Hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Englewood Hospital, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”

The grading methodology, peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety, highlights hospitals that excel in 22 evidence-based patient safety measures and are actively reducing lengths of stay and improving patient outcomes, including lowering mortality rates.

The Leapfrog Group issues updated safety grades twice a year, in spring and fall. Patients can access Englewood Hospital’s full safety grade details and tips for staying safe in hospitals at HospitalSafetyGrade.org
